{ TO READ OR NOT TO READ }

Ok so I have never been one to want to read. I think the only time I have ever read a book from start to finish was because I had to for school. Brian always makes fun of me because it takes me all of five minutes to finish a magazine. This is because all I do is look at the pictures. I rarely read an article. I guess its just the visual person in me. However I am aware that this is pathetic. Sooo when I was offered my mother in laws old kindle, I figured it was the perfect time to start enjoy reading. Anyway, I need recommendations. This whole reading thing is sure to be short lived if I dont find good books to read. So please help!

  1. Start with Pride and Prejudice. Every girl in the entire world needs to have read it.

Anne of Green Gables - is a funny one. And you'll be a true Kindred Spirit if you read it.

Harry Potter - YOU HAVE TO!

The Chosen - is just one of my favorite books ever. It's about little Jew boys in NYC during WWII. I just love the Jews.

Hunger Games - very easy, very stupid, very addicting.

Twilight - the worst books ever written, I loved them.

The Hiding Place - the main character is the best person that ever lived.

Term Limits - it's a boy book that I actually enjoyed. It's a bit long though (long as in it starts to drag)

The Secret Life of Bees - because who doesn't enjoy crying

The Glass Castle - true story, very sad, very interesting

Running with Scissors - there are no words

    Ender's Game - it's the best

The Lovely Bones - another crying book

The Alchemist - b/c every airport sells it AND it's short

Too Kill A Mockingbird - b/c Atticus is the most admirable person alive

And - another Jane Eyre one, Persuasion. But I'd read it after you've read all of her other books. It's fun to read her books in the order of her writing them b/c you truly see how much she grew up.
It's my favorite of her books but you'll appreciate it so much more after reading all of other books (even Emma, which is suprisingly hard to get through even though the movie of it is so good)

SORRY so many suggestions. when you talk about books you pull at my most tender heartstrings.

  2. I have to second your friend above here on a couple of these. Ender's Game...best book ever, but the second one, Ender's Shadow was even better! Also, The Hunger Games. These two are the best books I've read in the last five years. The Host is one I can reread, and I hate rereading novels. Stephanie Meyer's Twilight saga is shameful, but she is like a different author with The Host. It is such a great story. Now keep in mind, my suggestions are mostly fantasy or science fiction. I also really liked The Forest of Hands and Teeth (a little zombie romance, sounds weird and I even was wary, but I loved it!) Graceling was really great! I wish I had bought it so I could read it again. Also, the series by Shannon Hale starting with The Goose Girl was really unexpectedly great! I wish there were more. Anyways...let me know if you read any and what you think! Enjoy!

  4. Ok I HAVE to comment because I was totally you just a few years ago. I wouldn't start with any Jane Austen because you might give up on reading (I do love Jane Austen, don't get me wrong, but they're not as easy to get into) Start simple with Twilight, you will love them because they're an easy read. Then Hunger Games. These two series totally turned me into a reader. Can't wait to hear what you read!

  5. My two cents:

    - "Peace Like A River" by Lief Enger. This book is... spectacular. Merzy and I both cried in it, it's so touching and sweet. It's simple, but not boring at all. It will make you laugh out loud and then totally cry. This author also wrote "So Brave, Young, and Handsome," which I haven't read yet, but Merzy tells me it's just as good.

    - "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" by Jonathan Safran Foer. The only other book that has ever really made me cry. I don't even want to give you more of a preview than that. It will blow you away. I will tell you I laughed out loud-- HARD-- on the first page.

    - "Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. A dark and haunting mystery that totally takes you by surprise. Plus it takes place in Barcelona in the 1950's. It's DARK, I won't lie. But it's deliciously good.

    - I agree with Karina, the British classics are a little dense and don't read quickly like more modern series like Hunger Games. If you haven't read Harry Potter, I would recommend starting with that FOR SURE. I believe it's the best British literature of our generation.

    - If you do want some classic literature, "To Kill A Mockingbird" is really moving (and may be free for download on Kindle because the copyright may be expired). Another book in the same vein is "Dandelion Wine" by Ray Bradbury. It's Harry's favorite book of all time. It's like someone poured a glass of sparkling summertime and turned it into a book. Amazing.

    - "Special Topics in Calamity Physics" by Marisha Pessl. I'm serious, that's what it's called. It's actually a novel, and it has nothing to do with physics... It's actually a trippy mystery and really fun to read and totally catches you off guard.

    - Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. Surprisingly good although I don't love the author. I couldn't put it down.

    - I have to second Ender's Game. Orson Scott Card is a GENIUS.

    - "The Rembrandt Affair" by Daniel Silva. It's like a European "Mission: Impossible," only 50 times better than "Mission: Impossible." It makes you want to move to Switzerland and be an international spy.

    - Happy reading!
